Overview

The ESP Thread Border Router is Espressif's official reference design for building Thread 1.3 border routers and Zigbee 3.0 gateways. It uses a dual-SoC architecture: an ESP32-S3-WROOM-1 as the host processor running OpenThread's border router stack over WiFi, and an ESP32-H2-MINI-1 as the IEEE 802.15.4 radio co-processor providing physical and MAC layer access.

This board is the recommended platform for developing and deploying Matter-over-Thread infrastructure. The host SoC connects to your WiFi network and runs the Thread Border Router daemon, while the H2 co-processor handles all 802.15.4 radio operations — Thread mesh networking, Zigbee coordinator functions, and Matter commissioning flows.

An optional Sub-Ethernet daughter board extends connectivity to wired Ethernet networks for deployments where WiFi is not suitable. The board is fully supported by the open-source esp-thread-br SDK and holds a Thread 1.3 Certified Component Certificate from the Thread Group.
