Overview
The ESP32-S3-DevKitC-1 is Espressif's official reference development board for the ESP32-S3-WROOM-1 module family. It features the ESP32-S3 dual-core 240 MHz Xtensa LX7 processor with up to 45 GPIO pins broken out to two rows of header pads. The dual USB ports — one for UART debug and one for native USB OTG — allow simultaneous uploading, serial monitoring, and USB device emulation without disconnecting.
The board is available in three memory configurations depending on the WROOM-1 module variant. The N8R2 variant carries 8 MB Flash and 2 MB PSRAM; the N8R8 carries 8 MB Flash and 8 MB PSRAM; and the WROOM-2 N32R16V variant (DevKitC-1 v1.1) carries 32 MB Flash and 16 MB PSRAM for the most demanding edge-AI and multimedia applications.
The ESP32-S3's AI acceleration — vector instructions and neural-network optimised operations — makes the DevKitC-1 suitable for on-device TensorFlow Lite Micro inference, keyword spotting, and image classification. The rich peripheral set includes SPI, LCD, camera interface, I2C, I2S, UART, USB Serial/JTAG, TWAI/CAN, ADC, capacitive touch sensors, and a hardware temperature sensor.
An onboard RGB LED (GPIO 48) and reset/boot buttons are included. Power can be supplied via either USB port or the 5 V and 3.3 V header pins. ESP-IDF is the primary development environment; Arduino support was limited at time of initial release.
