RNode Firmware — Reticulum Encrypted Mesh Radio Interface
Open firmware that transforms LoRa boards into flexible encrypted radio interfaces for the Reticulum Network Stack — enabling unstoppable mesh networking over LoRa, WiFi, and packet radio.
Overview
RNode Firmware turns LILYGO LoRa development boards into general-purpose encrypted digital radio interfaces for the Reticulum Network Stack — a cryptography-based networking protocol (5,000+ GitHub stars) designed to build "unstoppable" networks. Unlike single-purpose mesh firmwares, RNode provides a flexible radio transport layer that supports multiple companion applications for messaging, file sharing, voice calls, and even hosting pages over LoRa.
The Reticulum Ecosystem
RNode is the hardware interface for a rich ecosystem of applications:
- Sideband (1,100+ stars): Encrypted messenger for Android/Linux/macOS with voice messages (Codec2/Opus), file transfers, and telemetry — all working over LoRa
- NomadNet (1,900+ stars): Terminal-based encrypted communications with a distributed message store and hosted pages — like a mini-internet over LoRa
- Reticulum MeshChat (900+ stars): Web-based mesh chat with messaging, file sharing, audio calls, and page browsing
- microReticulum: Native C++ port targeting ESP32 for standalone operation
Key Features
- Cryptographic Identity: Every node has a unique cryptographic identity — zero configuration, no accounts needed
- Multi-Transport: Works over LoRa, WiFi, I2P, serial, and packet radio simultaneously
- End-to-End Encryption: All communications are encrypted by default
- Multi-Hop Routing: Messages automatically route through the mesh
- Infrastructure Independent: No servers, no cloud, no cellular required
Getting Started
Install RNode firmware using the rnodeconf utility (Python). Connect your T-Beam or T-Echo to a computer or Android phone running Sideband. The RNode acts as the radio modem while the companion app provides the user interface. For standalone operation, microReticulum is an emerging option that runs directly on the ESP32.
Why This Project
Reticulum represents a fundamentally different approach to mesh networking — it's a complete networking stack, not just a chat protocol. The combination of cryptographic identity, multi-transport support, and a rich application ecosystem makes it one of the most capable open-source communication platforms available for LoRa hardware.
