esp32_loraprs — Multi-Mode LoRa Modem with APRS and Digital Voice

A Swiss-army-knife LoRa firmware combining KISS Bluetooth modem, APRS iGate, digipeater, and Codec2 digital voice transceiver — maximum amateur radio versatility in a single device.

Boards:ESP32ESP32-S3
Firmware:ArduinoPlatformIO
Use Cases:Ham RadioLoRa & WANMesh NetworkingAudio Projects

Overview

esp32_loraprs (236+ GitHub stars) is the most versatile LoRa firmware for amateur radio operators. It combines four distinct operating modes in a single firmware: a KISS Bluetooth modem for connecting to APRSDroid, an APRS iGate for bridging RF to the internet, a digipeater for extending mesh coverage, and a Codec2 digital voice transceiver for voice communication over LoRa.

Key Features

  • KISS Modem: Bluetooth KISS TNC interface — connect APRSDroid or any KISS-compatible app
  • APRS iGate: Bidirectional gateway between LoRa APRS packets and the APRS-IS internet network
  • Digipeater: Relay APRS packets to extend coverage range
  • Codec2 Digital Voice: Voice communication over LoRa at 700–3200 bps using the Codec2 vocoder — works with the companion Codec2 Talkie Android app
  • Multi-Mode: Switch between modes or run multiple modes simultaneously
  • GPS Integration: Beacon your GPS position for tracking via the T-Beam's built-in GPS
  • Low Power: Deep sleep modes for battery-powered operation — 48+ hours on 18650

Getting Started

Flash via PlatformIO targeting your board (T-Beam, T3 S3, etc.). Configure the operating mode and frequency in the settings. For KISS modem mode, pair with APRSDroid via Bluetooth. For digital voice, install the Codec2 Talkie app and connect an I2S audio module for microphone/speaker.

Why This Project

Most LoRa APRS firmwares focus on a single function. esp32_loraprs is unique in combining KISS modem, iGate, digipeater, AND digital voice in one package. For ham radio operators, this means one device that handles everything — from position tracking to voice QSOs over LoRa. The Codec2 digital voice feature is especially novel, enabling actual voice conversations over LoRa with open-source audio compression.
