My TTGO Watch: ESP32 Smartwatch Firmware for T-Watch 2020
The "hedge" GUI framework transforms the LILYGO T-Watch 2020 (V1/V2/V3) into a full-featured smartwatch with watch faces, step counting, Gadgetbridge notifications, weather, navigation, and a modular app ecosystem.
Overview
My-TTGO-Watch (also known as "hedge") is a comprehensive open-source GUI framework by Dirk Ziegelmeier that turns the LILYGO T-Watch 2020 series into a real smartwatch. While the official LILYGO firmware demonstrates basic features, hedge provides a polished, modular experience comparable to much more expensive commercial smartwatches — built entirely on the ESP32 and open-source libraries including LVGL and TFT_eSPI.
Features
The system supports Bluetooth Low Energy time synchronization and push notifications via the Gadgetbridge companion app on Android, pedometer step counting with daily goal tracking, and wake-on-wrist-rotation using the onboard accelerometer. Quick-access controls let you toggle WiFi, Bluetooth, GPS, screen brightness, and volume from a status bar. Multiple built-in watch faces (digital and analog) are available, with additional community-designed faces shareable via the project forum.
Application Ecosystem
Beyond basic smartwatch features, hedge includes a growing application ecosystem: music playback control over Bluetooth, navigation and mapping, stopwatch, alarm clock, weather display, calendar, infrared remote control, and integration with home automation systems. A native Linux emulator allows developers to write and test new apps without hardware.
Compatibility
The firmware supports T-Watch 2020 (V1, V2, V3), T-Watch 2021 (V1, V2), and even non-LILYGO platforms like M5Paper, M5Core2, and WT32-SC01 — making it a general-purpose ESP32 smartwatch OS that happens to fit the T-Watch hardware exceptionally well.
