Remote Attic Temperature Monitor with Bee Data Logger

Monitor remote attic or crawlspace temperatures over extended periods using the Bee Data Logger's ultra-low-power deep sleep mode. Logs temperature data to SD card for seasonal analysis and HVAC optimization.

Boards:ESP32-S3
Firmware:CircuitPythonArduino
Use Cases:Environmental MonitoringData LoggingHome Automation

Overview

This project uses the Bee Data Logger to monitor temperatures in hard-to-reach locations like attics, basements, crawlspaces, or outbuildings over weeks or months on a single battery charge. The ultra-low deep sleep current (~21µA) makes it ideal for long-term unattended monitoring where power outlets are unavailable.

Use Case

Understanding attic temperature patterns helps with:

  • Identifying insulation problems
  • Optimizing HVAC efficiency
  • Detecting potential moisture/condensation issues
  • Planning seasonal home maintenance

Hardware Required

  • Bee Data Logger (ESP32-S3)
  • I2C temperature sensor (e.g., BME280, SHT40, or TMP117 via Qwiic)
  • microSD card
  • LiPo battery (larger capacity recommended for multi-month monitoring)
  • CR1220 coin cell for RTC backup

How It Works

  1. Connect a Qwiic temperature sensor to one of the two STEMMA QT ports
  2. Flash the DeepSleepSD example with your preferred reading interval
  3. Place the logger in the attic or target location
  4. Retrieve the SD card periodically to analyze CSV data
  5. The DS3231 RTC ensures accurate timestamps throughout the monitoring period

Battery Life Estimates

With a 400mAh battery and readings every 2 hours, expect approximately 1 year of operation. With a 2000mAh battery, this extends to several years of continuous logging.
