Overview

The LILYGO T-Deck Plus improves on the original T-Deck by adding a built-in GPS module (u-blox) and making LoRa standard — turning it into an ideal Meshtastic handheld out of the box. This project by Jeff Geerling and the OM7TEK community covers setting up Meshtastic firmware on the T-Deck Plus with full GPS and offline map functionality, creating a self-contained mesh network communicator that works completely without internet or cellular connectivity.

Flashing Meshtastic

The T-Deck Plus is an officially supported Meshtastic device. Firmware can be flashed using the Meshtastic web flasher (flasher.meshtastic.org) or by compiling the experimental fancy-UI build from source for an enhanced visual experience with larger icons and touchscreen gestures. LILYGO also sells pre-flashed Meshtastic variants directly.

Adding Offline Maps

Meshtastic's built-in map display can render offline raster map tiles (OSM/Google Maps 256×256 PNG format) stored on the T-Deck's microSD card. The open-source tdeck-maps tool downloads and packages tiles for any region at configurable zoom levels. After copying the tile folder to the SD card, the T-Deck Plus shows your GPS position and all mesh network contacts on a zoomable, pannable map — entirely offline.

Real-World Use

The combination of QWERTY keyboard, 2.8-inch color touchscreen, built-in GPS, 915 MHz LoRa, and microSD map tiles makes the T-Deck Plus one of the most capable purpose-built Meshtastic handhelds available, suitable for backcountry operations, emergency communications, and event coordination.
