MechSenger Mechanical Keyboard Meshtastic Build

Single-board Meshtastic communicator with a mechanical keyboard and 2.42\" OLED display, designed for rugged off-grid mesh messaging using the Heltec Tracker with ESP32-S3 and SX1262 LoRa.

Boards:ESP32-S3
Firmware:Meshtastic
Use Cases:Mesh NetworkingGPS TrackingPortable Device

Overview

The MechSenger is a single-board Meshtastic communicator designed by Peter "Bobricius" Misenko as a mechanical keyboard variant of the TrackSenger. It features a full low-profile mechanical keyboard, a larger 2.42" OLED display, and is designed to fit inside Peli-style protective cases for rugged field use.

Hardware

Built on a single PCB that hosts both the keyboard and the Heltec Tracker module:

  • Core module: Heltec Wireless Tracker (ESP32-S3 + SX1262 + GPS) — no-display variant recommended
  • Input: 36 Kailh low-profile mechanical switches with optional RGB LED backlighting
  • Display: 2.42" OLED (128x64, I2C) — larger than the TrackSenger's built-in TFT
  • Audio: PIEZO 1109 buzzer
  • Power: Side switch (JS102011SAQN) + optional 18650 battery holder
  • Extras: Optional 36x LEDs for key backlighting with ~75R current-limiting resistor

Assembly

Solder the Kailh switches, OLED display, and headers. The Heltec Tracker (no-screen variant) plugs directly into the board. Flash firmware via the Meshtastic WebFlasher at flasher.meshtastic.org — select "TrackSenger (big OLED)" as the device profile.

GPS

The PCB includes a built-in GPS antenna trace. For areas with poor reception, an external GPS antenna can be connected.

Availability

Available on Tindie from $24.99 (bare PCB) to $274.99 (fully assembled).
