Dynamic Electricity Price Heat Pump Control
Optimizes Panasonic Aquarea heat pump operation based on dynamic electricity prices (Tibber) or solar PV surplus, reducing energy costs by shifting heating to cheaper rate periods.
Overview
This project uses dynamic electricity pricing data (e.g., from Tibber) or home photovoltaic production to optimize when a Panasonic Aquarea heat pump runs, shifting energy-intensive operations to the cheapest hours and maximizing self-consumption of solar power.
Features
- Dynamic Pricing Integration: Connects to Tibber or similar dynamic electricity price APIs to determine optimal run times
- Solar PV Optimization: Prioritizes heat pump operation during periods of high solar production to maximize self-consumption
- Buffer Tank Strategy: Pre-heats buffer tanks and DHW during cheap rate periods to store thermal energy
- Cost Tracking: Monitors and reports actual energy costs vs. baseline flat-rate costs
- HeishaMon MQTT Control: Sends commands to the heat pump via HeishaMon's MQTT interface
How It Works
The system monitors electricity prices for upcoming hours and compares them against configurable thresholds. When prices are low (or solar production is high), it increases heat pump activity. During expensive periods, it reduces operation to the minimum needed to maintain comfort.
Use Cases
- Households with dynamic electricity tariffs (Tibber, Awattar, Nordpool)
- Solar PV owners wanting to maximize self-consumption
- Anyone looking to reduce heat pump operating costs without sacrificing comfort
Requirements
- HeishaMon device connected to a Panasonic Aquarea heat pump
- Dynamic electricity price provider (Tibber, etc.) or solar inverter with API
- MQTT broker
- Home automation platform for scheduling logic
