Meshtastic LoRa Mesh Node with LILYGO T3-S3

A compact off-grid LoRa mesh communication node built on the LILYGO T3-S3, running Meshtastic firmware for long-range text messaging, GPS position sharing, and sensor telemetry without cellular or internet.

Firmware:Meshtastic
Use Cases:Mesh NetworkingPortable DeviceLoRa & WAN

Overview

The LILYGO T3-S3 is one of the officially supported Meshtastic platforms, combining an ESP32-S3 microcontroller with an SX1262 or SX1276 LoRa radio in a compact form factor with built-in 0.96" OLED display and microSD card slot. Running Meshtastic firmware, it joins a LoRa mesh network where nodes relay each other's messages, extending range far beyond any single radio hop.

Capabilities

Meshtastic nodes on the T3-S3 communicate at 915 MHz (US) or 868 MHz (EU) with typical node-to-node ranges of 5–15 km in open terrain. The mesh protocol stores-and-forwards messages, enabling communication through multiple relay hops. Supported features include encrypted group and direct messaging, GPS position sharing, Bluetooth pairing to the Meshtastic phone app, and sensor telemetry (temperature, barometric pressure, air quality).

Getting Started

Flash the firmware using the Meshtastic web flasher at flasher.meshtastic.org — select the LILYGO T3-S3 board variant matching your LoRa chip (SX1262 or SX1276). Configure via the Meshtastic Android/iOS app over Bluetooth, or via the serial CLI. No additional hardware is required for basic mesh operation; add an external GPS module to the UART pins for position reporting if the device will be used as a tracker.
