ESP32-CAM FPV — Low-Latency Digital Video for Drones and RC
Digital first-person-view (FPV) video streaming firmware for ESP32 cameras optimized for minimum latency — turns the T-Camera S3 into a lightweight digital FPV transmitter for drones and RC vehicles.
Overview
ESP32-CAM FPV (387+ GitHub stars) is a specialized firmware that optimizes ESP32 camera boards for first-person-view video streaming with minimum latency. Unlike standard MJPEG streaming (which buffers frames), this firmware prioritizes real-time delivery — making it suitable for piloting drones, RC cars, and robots where every millisecond of lag matters.
Key Features
- Low Latency: Optimized streaming pipeline minimizing frame-to-display delay
- WiFi Streaming: Stream video over WiFi to a ground station app or browser
- Configurable Quality: Adjust resolution and JPEG quality to balance latency vs. image quality
- Lightweight: Minimal firmware footprint — ideal for weight-sensitive drone builds
- Ground Station App: Companion viewer application for receiving the FPV feed
- DVR Recording: Record received video on the ground station side
Getting Started
Flash the FPV firmware via PlatformIO. Mount the T-Camera S3 on your drone or RC vehicle. Connect the ground station to the ESP32's WiFi AP. Launch the ground station viewer to see the live FPV feed. Adjust camera angle and image quality to match your use case.
Why This Project
Traditional analog FPV systems require expensive dedicated video transmitters and receivers. This firmware turns a ~$15 ESP32 camera board into a digital FPV transmitter that streams over standard WiFi. While it won't match the range of dedicated FPV systems, it's perfect for short-range applications: indoor FPV drones, RC cars, telepresence robots, and remote inspection vehicles.
