QMK/Vial Firmware for Micro Journal Rev.3 Nadia
Open-source QMK keyboard firmware with Vial support for the Micro Journal Rev.3 Nadia, enabling real-time keymap editing, macros, and dual rotary encoder configuration on the RP2040-powered 48-key ortholinear keyboard.
Overview
The Micro Journal Rev.3: Nadia ships with QMK firmware compiled with Vial support, turning the 48-key ortholinear keyboard into a fully programmable writing tool. The firmware runs on the RP2040 (Raspberry Pi Pico) and exposes all 48 keys plus two EC11 rotary encoders for real-time configuration via the Vial desktop application.
Features
- Real-time keymap editing via the Vial GUI — no recompilation needed
- Multiple keyboard layers for function keys, navigation, symbols, and macros
- Dual rotary encoder support — configure scrolling, volume, undo/redo per layer
- N-key rollover (NKRO) — full anti-ghosting with diode matrix
- Mouse keys — use the keyboard as a mouse when needed
- Bootmagic reset — hold top-left key while plugging in to enter bootloader
Hardware Configuration
The firmware is configured for a 12-column x 5-row matrix using GPIO pins GP2-GP18 for the key matrix, and GP19-GP22 for two rotary encoders. The diode direction is ROW2COL.
Flashing
The precompiled unkyulee_vial.uf2 firmware file is available in the repository. To flash:
- Hold the BOOTSEL button on the Raspberry Pi Pico and plug in the USB cable
- The Pico appears as a USB mass storage device
- Drag and drop the
.uf2file onto the drive - The keyboard reboots automatically
For custom builds from source, use the QMK build system:
make unkyulee/ortho_48:default
Customization
Open the Vial desktop application (available at get.vial.today) to:
- Remap any key on any layer
- Configure tap-dance, combos, and one-shot modifiers
- Set rotary encoder actions per layer
- Create macros for frequently typed phrases
