Controlling LEDs With Your Mind (EEG) Using Arduino Uno R4
Build a brain-computer interface that reads EEG beta waves to illuminate LEDs on the Arduino Uno R4 LED matrix when you concentrate, using BioAmp EXG Pill and Brain BioAmp Band.
Overview
This project demonstrates a simple brain-computer interface (BCI) that detects beta brainwave activity (13-30 Hz) associated with concentration and uses it to control LEDs on the Arduino Uno R4's built-in LED matrix.
Hardware Required
- BioAmp EXG Pill
- Brain BioAmp Band (or gel electrodes)
- BioAmp Cable v3
- Arduino Uno R4 Minima or WiFi
- Jumper cables
How It Works
The BioAmp EXG Pill records EEG from the prefrontal cortex via the Brain BioAmp Band. The Arduino Uno R4 performs real-time FFT analysis using the CMSIS-DSP library to extract beta wave bandpower. When concentration levels exceed a threshold, LEDs illuminate on the board's matrix display.
Firmware
Uses the Brain BioAmp Arduino Firmware examples:
- BCI FFT - Displays live EEG bandpower (Delta, Theta, Alpha, Beta, Gamma) on Serial Monitor
- BCI LED - Controls LED based on focus levels
- BCI Spiral - Runs a spiral LED game based on concentration
What You'll Learn
- Real-time FFT analysis of brain signals on Arduino
- Beta wave detection for concentration monitoring
