ADXI — ADX Improved USB-C Digital Modes Transceiver

Modernized fork of the ADX transceiver by VK2DIY featuring single USB-C interface, KiCad design files, integrated SWR/power metering, SMT components, PlatformIO firmware, and expanded band support from 2200m to 70cm.

Boards:atmega328p
Firmware:arduino
Use Cases:Amateur Radio

Overview

ADXI (ADX Improved) is a modernized fork of the original ADX (Arduino Digital Xceiver) project by WB2CBA. Created by VK2DIY, the ADXI deliberately abandons the original's simplicity-first philosophy in favor of expanded capabilities, modern tooling, and professional-grade features.

Key Improvements Over Original ADX

  • Single USB-C interface replacing multiple cables for programming, power, and audio I/O
  • Modern KiCad PCB design with proper design documentation
  • Surface-mount components for manufacturing repeatability
  • Integrated power metering with SWR, forward, and reverse power measurement
  • Vastly expanded band support: 70cm through 2200m
  • Computer-only control eliminating physical buttons and LED indicators
  • PlatformIO firmware replacing Arduino IDE for professional development workflow
  • Enhanced filtering and improved documentation

Design Philosophy

While the original ADX prioritized simplicity and minimal cost, ADXI takes a different approach — optimizing for capability, reliability, and modern engineering practices. The project includes extensive design documentation to facilitate learning and reproducibility.

Status

Initial boards have been fabricated and testing is underway. The project integrates known bug fixes from the original ADX design and adds new features not present in any other ADX variant.

Supported Modes

FT8, FT4, JS8Call, and WSPR via WSJT-X software integration, inheriting the ADX family's core digital mode capabilities while expanding the hardware platform significantly.
