Zelkova Tree Monitoring with Chirp Sensors
Open-source environmental monitoring project deploying 40 Chirp I2C soil moisture sensors in Crete for long-term tree health monitoring. Demonstrates large-scale capacitive soil sensing for forestry research.
Use Cases:Environmental MonitoringData Logging
Overview
An open-source field deployment project that uses a batch of 40 Chirp / Catnip Electronics I2C soil moisture sensors for continuous tree monitoring in Crete. The project demonstrates how the Chirp sensor can be scaled for serious environmental research and forestry applications.
Key Aspects
- Large-scale deployment of 40 sensors across a field site
- Long-term soil moisture logging for tree health assessment
- Open-source data logging solution
- Real-world validation of capacitive sensing in Mediterranean climate conditions
Why Chirp Sensors
The capacitive sensing approach avoids electrode corrosion, making the Chirp sensor well-suited for deployments that must operate unattended in soil for months or years. The I2C bus allows multiple sensors to share wiring runs back to a central data logger.
