Hackable CMWX1ZZABZ LoRa Devices — Grasshopper Open Hardware Project
Open hardware project documenting the Grasshopper, LoRaSensorTile, and Cricket boards built on the CMWX1ZZABZ module, with schematics, BOM, and design files on Hackaday.io.
Hackable CMWX1ZZABZ LoRa Devices
An open hardware project by Kris Winer (Tlera Corp) documenting the design and development of LoRa/LoRaWAN devices built on the Murata CMWX1ZZABZ module, hosted on Hackaday.io.
Overview
This project covers a family of three open hardware boards designed around the CMWX1ZZABZ module (STM32L082 + SX1276):
- Grasshopper — 18 x 45 mm development board exposing all 19 GPIOs, designed for breadboard prototyping
- LoRaSensorTile — 23 x 23 mm sensor tile with BME280, BMA280, VEML6040, and 16 MB SPI flash
- Cricket Asset Tracker — 23 x 46 mm GPS tracker with GNSS receiver
Grasshopper Specifications
- Murata CMWX1ZZABZ-078 FCC certified module
- STM32L082 Cortex M0+ MCU (32 MHz, 192 KB flash, 20 KB RAM)
- Semtech SX1276 LoRa radio modem
- NCV8170 LDO for ultra-low power (2.1 uA sleep)
- On-board PCB antenna (858-928 MHz) with uFL connector option
- USB programming via embedded bootloader
- Power LED with solder jumper for disabling
Design Files
The Hackaday.io project page includes schematics, BOM files (including Grasshopper.v01f.BOM.ods), and detailed build logs documenting power usage measurements and hardware optimization techniques.
Arduino Support
All devices are programmable via the Arduino IDE using the ArduinoCore-stm32l0 core, with native LoRaWAN stack support and no AT commands required.
