## Description

## Overview

The Banana Pi M5 is a capable single-board computer designed by SinoVoip, built around the Amlogic S905X3 quad-core Cortex-A55 SoC running at up to 2.0 GHz. With 4GB of LPDDR4 RAM and 16GB of eMMC flash storage, it offers solid performance for media, NAS, and general Linux server workloads. It also features a microSD card slot for easy OS booting and storage expansion.

Connectivity is a strong point: the M5 provides four USB 3.0 Type-A ports with UASP support for fast external storage, a native Gigabit Ethernet port, and an HDMI 2.1 output capable of 4K resolution. Unlike some contemporaries, the M5 does not include built-in WiFi or Bluetooth — a trade-off that makes it better suited for wired server or NAS deployments where radio interference is unwanted. A 40-pin GPIO header provides access to I2C, SPI, UART, and PWM interfaces.

Power delivery requires a dedicated 12V DC barrel jack (not USB-C PD), so a proper power supply is mandatory. Armbian provides well-maintained standard support images for both desktop (XFCE) and minimal/IOT use cases, and the board is popular in the community for self-hosted applications, Home Assistant, and OpenMediaVault NAS builds.
